Job description

Safran Seats is the world leader in the commercial aircraft seats segment. We design, certify and assemble a complete range of products from crew seats through to business and first class modules. Today over one million Safran seats are in service in fleets all over the world, the continuous improvement of seat comfort and ergonomics is at the heart of our product design strategy.

We are looking to appoint a Head of the Mechanical Design Office to join our engineering team at our South Wales site in Cwmbran, in close proximity to both Cardiff and Bristol.

You will be responsible for leading the mechanical design function to ensure integrated mechanical design solutions.

Key responsibilities include:

• Responsible for the quality and on-time delivery of mechanical designs across all projects.
• Ensuring the team has the right competency levels with recruitment, development of people and training.
• Prepare, review and approve mechanical design documentation to submit for customer and regulatory approval.
• Work in collaboration with the programme team to ensure that products meet cost and weight targets.
• Work in collaboration with the Project teams to ensure successful and on-time delivery of projects.
• Responsible for the mechanical design tools & processes.
• Responsible for the governance of mechanical design tasks.
• Liaise with internal and external customers, suppliers, departments and regulatory bodies as required.
• Work to the group KPI's for Quality, Cost & Delivery.
• Support the business with initiatives to drive continuous improvement of department processes and manuals and in developing new capabilities and methods.
• Ensure the technical data, drawings and models are released within the timescales agreed for each of the running projects.
• Implement a ‘Right First Time' culture for the production of engineering drawings & models in each of the specialist areas. Continually interface with sales, manufacturing and operations to integrate feedback into improving and refining design solutions, particularly in relation to ‘design for manufacture'.
• Develop processes and systems to monitor and evaluate the performance of the design teams, highlight emerging issues and work closely with the teams to develop robust solutions.

Candidate skills & requirements

You will be educated to degree level in a Mechanical / Aerospace / Structural Engineering Field or gained HNC /HND or equivalent level qualification in a Mechanical / Aerospace / Structural Engineering field with demonstrated knowledge and experience in systems design, developing concept and detailing engineering solutions.

The incumbent will have a Continuous Improvement spirit to constructively challenge existing systems, develop robust design processes and standards and embed these throughout the mechanical design function.

Able to challenge the status quo and established processes and encourage, support and guide individuals and teams with a spirit of continued improvement.

Work with each of the engineering disciplines, ensuring that their inputs are validated and integrated into compliant and ‘Right First Time' solutions.

Highly experienced in working to industry standards and codes, in particular within the Aerospace industry.

Sound organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage teams to meet deadlines.
