Job description

The Lead Stress Engineer provides analytical guidance in structural and occupant injury simulation leading a programme specific technical team of stress engineers, working closely with other functions such as Design, Certification and Production to ensure that seating products are lightweight, durable and safe throughout their working life.

The Lead Stress Engineer is responsible for the planning, oversight and delivery of all stress activities relating to specific products/platforms within SSGB to which they have been assigned.
Industry Knowledge
• Preferably a working knowledge of regulations FAR/CS 25-561, EASA Part 21 J, ARP 5526 and Airframer specifications.
Organisation / Planning
• In support of specific programs thoroughly plan and manage all stress activities.
• Responsible for the management of a program specific team of stress engineers to ensure tasks are completed to requirements on time.
• In-depth working knowledge of aerospace industry standard stress analysis methods covering both hand calculations, linear/non-linear implicit FE analysis and/or multi-body dynamic analysis and/or non-linear explicit FE analysis methods.
• Ensure that the risk of a certification test failure is managed effectively and minimised with the use of appropriate analytical methods and judgement.
• Review and approve hand calculations, linear static, non-linear, crash, multi-body dynamic and optimisation FE models for seating products to support the design and certification process, plus the in-service life of the product.
• Review and approve stress and structural documentation to submit for internal/external customers and regulatory approval.
• Review and approve drawings, designs, concessions and repairs with respect to stress.
• Support the Design team in ensuring that products meet cost and weight targets
Problem Solving
• Where structural issues are identified ensure appropriate improvements have been recommended and alternate solutions assessed ensuring the optimum solution is identified.
• Leading/driving root cause analysis (e.g. 8D/Ishikawa)
Communication / Interpersonal
• Liaise with Design, Certification, Manufacturing and other company departments as required.
• Liaise with external suppliers, customers, airframers, regulatory bodies and other industrial organisations as required.
Creativity / Innovation
• Provide expertise in continuous improvement of department processes, methods and manuals.
